India's Seed Industry Highlights Agrobiodiversity as Key to Resilience Amid Global Shocks

The Federation of Seed Industry of India (FSII) has emphasized the critical importance of preserving and strengthening India's agricultural biodiversity in the face of global challenges such as climate variability, geopolitical tensions, and supply chain disruptions.
Ajai Rana, Chairman of FSII, highlighted that seed diversity and resilient crop genetics are essential for ensuring food security, economic stability, and farmer resilience.
India is recognized as one of the richest regions in agrobiodiversity, with thousands of traditional crop varieties, including rice, millet, pulses, and oilseeds, that have evolved to withstand diverse climatic conditions.

Why It's Important?

The preservation of India's agrobiodiversity is vital for mitigating risks associated with climate change, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical uncertainties. Diverse and locally adaptive seed systems can stabilize agricultural productivity and reduce vulnerability during periods of global instability. Without adequate focus on biodiversity, farmers may face increased challenges from extreme weather events, pests, and resource scarcity. FSII estimates that with supportive policies and innovation, India could significantly expand its global seed market share, enhancing both economic and food security.
